Drawing, writing, watching: it's all about art at Confederation Centre gallery

September 12, 2011

Three public events at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery this month take different perspectives on the creative process:

Screening of Aakideh: The Art and Legacy of Carl Beam
This 65 minute documentary film is a candid portrait of Carl Beam, whose works are currently on display as part of the exhibition Depiction.

From his early years growing up on Manitoulin Island to his turbulent years spent at residential school, this documentary explores how these experiences impacted Beam's life and his art. Personal remembrances along with insights about his art and ideas are vividly illustrated through dozens of Beam's artworks, family photos, interviews, performance videos, and journals. Thursday, September 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. Free.

Sunday Drawing
The open drawing/copying session in the gallery returns. A quick drawing lesson followed by time for sketching and copying throughout the gallery. An experienced art teacher will be available to give drawing tips and feedback. Bring your own sketchbook or use materials provided by the gallery. Sunday, September 18 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Free. Appropriate for all ages.

Critical Writing Workshop with Ray Cronin
Writing critically, specifically in the areas of exhibition reviews, will be the focus of this workshop. Participants should be prepared to share the exercises they write in the workshop with the other participants. Admission is $20 for the general public, $15 for members of the PEI Writers Guild and $10 for students. Thursday, September 29, 7 to 10 p.m. Pre-register by emailing
