Free wax workshop will be hive of creativity at Confederation Centre gallery

September 28, 2011

The Confederation Centre Art Gallery will be a hive of activity during Culture Days, with a hands-on, behind the scenes creative activity involving beeswax.

Inspired by the creations of Aganetha Dyck and her bee hive themed exhibition Guest Workers at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, the Centre is inviting the public to dig up old treasures and transform them into waxy works of art!

The workshop will begin in the gallery, gathering inspiration from the Guest Workers show. Participants will continue down to the Schurman Family Studio for an introduction to working with wax, and ultimately creating an object that participants bring to the workshop using discards, beeswax and paper.

"It will be an exploration of wax as a medium, and using wax to alter objects," says B.J. McCarville, visual arts educator at the Centre.

The workshop will involve molten beeswax which smells delicious but presents certain safety concerns since it is very hot. For this reason the activity is designed for participants ages 12 and older. Minors must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

Suggested discards for the participants to bring along are: Newspapers, odds and ends of white and colored paper, a few shoe boxes, paper plates, paper cups, old eye glasses, sunglasses, small plastic dolls, small toys, three pairs of high heeled shoes, old or gently used 1 and 2 inch paint brushes, old, small lamps, old evening bags, handbags, a handful of feathers or an old wig, broken discarded jewelry, plastic or silk flowers, or paper supplies of any kind. The Gallery will have some on hand in the Studio but please feel free to bring along any small treasures of your own.

"Bring your abandoned treasures and learn to transform them and make other creations using beeswax," McCarville says.

Please pre-register by contacting Erin Fitzpatrick via email at efitzpatrick@confederationcentre.com. The Working With Wax Workshop is Sunday, October 2, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and is free to attend.
