Hockey Bar exhibit, features Two of Canada’s Favourite Pastimes- Hockey and Beer

February 1, 2012

Confederation Centre Art Gallery will transform its Entrance Gallery into a welcoming social space featuring hockey and bar-related artworks alongside Island hockey memorabilia (Charlottetown, PE, February 1, 2012) - During the week leading up to Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012 the Confederation Centre Art Gallery is pleased to be hosting The King and I Present: Hockey Bar. This exhibition will double as an actual sports bar serving drinks during "happy hour" (February 8-11 5:00-7:00 p.m.; closed Thursday, February 9th for private function). Toronto-based Stefan Hancherow and Halifax-based Eleanor King, the two curators of the exhibit, will be also acting as bartenders. The show opens its first happy hour Saturday, February 4th at 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Art lovers and hockey fans are invited to drop by, check out the show, and have a beer!

The exhibition features a unique combination of artworks and objects you might find in a sports bar. Including, Graeme Patterson's Ten Point Game, a table-hockey based sculpture featuring an animation narrated by Darryl Sittler; Ali Nickerson's altered bar stool, Colleen, will occupy the same space as real bar furniture; a big screen showing hockey games, and PEI hockey memorabilia; much of it generously lent by Don Murnaghan from the Civic Centre. The show features prominent artists from across Canada, including Leah Modigliani and Ron Terada (Vancouver), Chris Lloyd (Montreal), Graeme Patterson (Sackville, N.B.), Thierry Delva, Craig Ferguson, and Ali Nickerson (Halifax), among others. It will also showcase a significant work from the Confederation Centre Art Gallery's collection, Andy Warhol's portrait, Wayne Gretzky 99.

"The Confederation Centre Art Gallery is proud to be partnering with the local organizing committee of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012" says Art Gallery Director Kevin Rice. "The King and I Present: Hockey Bar will combine art with a classic Canadian social environment ‘the sports bar.' We hope this exhibition will attract hockey fans, our regular visitors and perhaps some of the CBC hockey personalities and NHL Alumni will make Hockey Bar a stop during their visit to Prince Edward Island."

Catch the happy hours and you might get to chat with artist Graeme Patterson or curators Stefan Hancherow, and Eleanor King. Or, maybe even one of the many NHL Alumni and hockey personalities and celebrities in town. Confirmed to be attending Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012 events are CBC Hockey Night in Canada hosts Ron MacLean and Don Cherry; NHL alumni Wendel Clark and Mark Napier; writer and musician Dave Bidini; CBC hockey personalities PJ Stock and Cassie Campbell-Pascall; and hockey broadcasting legend Dick Irvin to name a few.

The King and I Present: Hockey Bar will be on display in the Entrance Gallery from February 4 - April 15.
