‘This Anne Place’ exhibition a fresh exploration of Anne of Green Gables as Idea, Book, and Musical

November 30, 1999

(Charlottetown, P.E.I.) - A 50th anniversary exhibition is set to open this month that celebrates the generative genius of L.M. Montgomery, her novel Anne of Green Gables, and the golden 50th season of Confederation Centre's beloved Anne of Green Gables-The MusicalTM. ‘This Anne Place: Anne of Green Gables as Idea, Book, and Musical,' curated by Dr. Elizabeth R. Epperly, opens this Saturday May 17 and shows until September 7.Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908, was an immediate best seller and has since sold millions of copies in more than 30 languages. Don Harron, and Norman and Elaine Campbell, believed that only a musical could hope to capture, for theatre, the magic of Montgomery's writing and Anne's imagination. 50 years later, the musical holds a Guinness World Record for longest-running annual production, and has toured to dozens of parts of the globe.

Epperly is the founding chair of the L.M. Montgomery Institute at UPEI and author and editor of numerous articles and books on Montgomery including "Imagining Anne: The Island Scrapbooks of L.M. Montgomery" (2008). "It is such a privilege to work with Confederation Centre, especially during this commemorative year," she says. "For many people, Anne of Green Gables is Canada, and so it seems triply important, during this special anniversary, that we celebrate one of Canada's great homes for the imagination."

Included are several of Montgomery's photographic images; pages from her handwritten manuscript of Anne of Green Gables, a cultural treasure preserved in the Gallery's permanent collection; three first-edition copies of the novel, and even Montgomery's own watch, both courtesy of the L.M. Montgomery Institute, UPEI. Other featured items are artifacts from various seasons of Anne of Green Gables-The MusicalTM, including wardrobe pieces, props, set pieces, and original sketches from costume designer Marie Day.

Anne of Green Gables is even more than a classic novel and brilliant musical: it inspires a state of mind, a way of being in a special place. ‘This Anne Place' is vibrant with colour and charged with energy; it is Prince Edward Island, and it is also the landscape of the human heart.

Appreciation is extended to Hyndman and Company for sponsoring this commemorative exhibition. ‘This Anne Place: Anne of Green Gables as Idea, Book, and Musical,' opens May 17 at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery.
