Hans Wendt - Studio Painting

Hans Wendt has developed his skills as a painter primarily through self-directed study, but has also taken ceramics studio courses and worked as a carpenter. This deep appreciation of the crafted object, combined with an interest in conceptually driven painting, is at the core of Hans Wendt’s ‘Studio Painting’.

Wendt’s recent works emerge, both in form and content, from his studio environment, where he can apply a philosophical eye to his exercises in clay, discarded doodles, and the ever-changing composition of a pincushion – all of which are subjects for his work. Wendt, however, prefers to work from photographs to create precise and realistic watercolour paintings, images that draw attention to the simple beauty and craft of the handmade objects that surround him.

By the same process he also makes abstract paintings that explore the expressive potential in the simple variation of colors. Like the image works, these painting make visible the material and intellectual process of selection inherent to his studio practice.

Through Wendt’s paintings we are invited into his studio and process, to experience the clarity of his observations, and to appreciate his reverence for the act and history of painting.

Hans Wendt was born in Halifax, and grew up on the Argyle Shore of Prince Edward Island. He has lived, and worked, in France, Toronto, and the west coast of the United States. Wendt returned to live in PEI in 1997, where he has been active in the cultural scene and for the past few years, operated an organic market garden business.

Hans Wendt - Studio Painting is curated by Lee Plested.
