An exhibition of photographs taken by Island immigrant youth is currently on display at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. The exhibit is the result of photography workshops and day camps held this past summer with the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada.

Our Vision: A Collection of Photographic Images by Immigrant Youth in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island features 25 images taken by youth in grades 2 to 10. The exhibit was coordinated by Becka Viau, the gallery’s visual arts educator, and Launa Gauthier, Settlement Worker in Schools- ISL Program with the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada.

“Inspired by the vision of approximately one hundred of Charlottetown’s immigrant youth, this selection of photographic works aims to capture the essence of the extraordinary in the everyday,” Gauthier writes in her exhibit description.

“Students of all ages, from different parts of the world (including Africa, Asia and North and South America) spent time studying basic, hands-on photography techniques and creative composition. The project allowed for the children to view their new surroundings - its people, culture and environment - through the lens of a camera. Be it through finding interesting angles on ordinary objects, focusing in on vibrant colours or capturing the natural expressions of the faces of their peers, students were able to use photography as an art form and expression of personal creativity.”

Our Vision is on display in the Young Peoples Gallery until February 21, 2010. Inspired by the vision of approximately one hundred of Charlottetown's immigrant youth, this exhibition embodies a selection of photographic works that aims to capture the essence of the extraordinary in the everyday.

Our Vision is the product of the artistic component of an eight-week student summer program, held at the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada. Students of all ages, from different parts of the world (including Africa, Asia and North and South America) spent time studying basic, hands-on photography techniques and creative composition. The project allowed the students to view their new surroundings—its people, culture and environment—through the lens of a camera. Be it through finding interesting angles on ordinary objects, focusing in on vibrant colors, or capturing the natural expressions of the faces of their peers, students were able to use photography as an art form and expression of personal creativity.
