Charlottetown - The Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Mugisha Enterprises invite children ages four to 10 and their caregivers to a free interactive storytelling event with peace education specialist Dr. Michael Williams on Saturday, February 10, from 1-2 p.m. in the gallery.
Williams, affectionately known as Doc Michael, will tell stories and sing, and have the participants take part in peace-themed activities and conversation. Refreshments and conversation will follow the event.
Born and raised in Canada, and now living in Scotland for nearly 20 years, Williams is a teacher, peace educator, conflict counsellor, musician, writer and storyteller. He tells contemporary and traditional tales from around the world with a particular focus on North America. His repertoire includes Native American tales, Canadian folktales, and stories and songs from Appalachia, the Wild West and the folk tradition.
He has incorporated storytelling into his counselling and peace education work with young people and is a member of the Edinburgh-based “Dirty Rascals” storytelling group which explores the therapeutic and healing power of stories and storytelling.
He has worked in many fields, from the mines of Northern Ontario to the towers of academia in Scotland. In 1993 he was awarded a PhD in English Literature, a subject he went on to teach for more than 15 years. And, in 2001, he earned an advanced diploma in local history from Oxford University. Throughout, he has come to appreciate the stories and history of ordinary and extraordinary people and enjoys helping others to tell their story as well as remembering those from the recent and distant past.
This event is co-presented by the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Charlottetown-based Mugisha Enterprises, producer of a youth-oriented animated web project called The Amazing Traveling Friendship Fair!
