Public memorial service in honour of the late Dr. Frank and Daphne MacKinnon to be held at Confederation Centre July 25

The family of the late Dr. Frank and Daphne MacKinnon invite members of the public to a memorial service in honour of their parents on Wednesday, July 25, at 3 p.m. at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

Susan Lawson will chair the memorial service, which will be held in the Centre’s Memorial Hall. Dr. and Mrs. MacKinnon’s children, Philip, Peter, David MacKinnon and Pam Prior will give brief reviews of their parents’ lives. A reception will be held after the service. All are welcome to attend.

Born in Charlottetown in 1919, Dr. MacKinnon was educated at Prince of Wales College, McGill University and the University of Toronto from which he received his Ph.D. in 1950. After teaching at Carleton University in Ottawa, he became the last principal of Prince of Wales College. In 1968 he joined the political science department at the University of Calgary where he worked until his retirement in 1984.

An accomplished writer, teacher and public servant, Dr. MacKinnon worked tirelessly to promote arts and culture in Canada. He considered the establishment of the Confederation Centre, Canada’s National Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation, his greatest accomplishment.

A founding member of the Canada Council for the Arts, he received many awards for his work, including the Order of Canada in 1969, the Governor General’s Award for academic non-fiction in 1952, and honorary degrees from the University of New Brunswick and Dalhousie University. Dr. MacKinnon died in 2006, and Mrs. MacKinnon in 2003.
