August is heating up at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery

The Confederation Centre Art Gallery invites everyone to check out their Art Talk and family programming schedules for August – trading cards, animation and hands-on activities mean there’s something for everyone!

Art Talk continues on August 14 at 7 p.m. as Island art historian Pan Wendt discusses art and trade. This lecture is a must for anyone interested in the question of art for money, as well as everyone signed-up for the Artist Trading Card Event on August 15 in the gallery. A reminder to all participants – have your 55 cards ready!

Wendt will discuss a self portrait by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer on August 21.

The final Art Talk of the summer, on August 28, will be hosted by curatorial assistant Megan Stewart. Celebrate Canada’s tradition of animation innovation with the free screening Short Stuff: A Night of Animated Shorts.

Featuring six award-winning Canadian short animations from 1952 to 2006, including Ryan (2004), Walking (1968) and Neighbours (1952), this is a must-see event for anyone interested in moving pictures.

Hosted by artists and curators every Tuesday at 7 p.m., Art Talks are free informal discussions on art theory and history, artists and their work, and upcoming or current gallery shows. Everyone is welcome and no previous knowledge on the topic is required.

Keep your kids’ imagination – and hands – active this summer with our children’s art education programs.

This summer’s second Art in the Park will focus on the work of artist-in-residence Justin Tate at Cavendish Grove (in the P.E.I. National Park off Route 6, formerly Rainbow Valley), on August 18 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Come and challenge your imagination by creating new creatures that live in Cavendish!

Art in the Park is a free bilingual art education program for children ages four to 12 and their caregivers. Tate, a recent graduate of NSCAD, works in a number of media. This is the second year the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Prince Edward Island National Park have collaborated together to offer residencies. Tate is joined by comic book artist Charmaine Wheatley, who began her work in July.

Family Sunday will be hosted by gallery educator Siobhan Wiggans in the Charles Comfort exhibition on August 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. Bring your budding Comfort to the Lower West Gallery, where she or he will draw self-portraits and landscapes.

For children ages four to 10 and their caregivers, Family Sunday offers children the chance to meet with artists, view current shows and take part in hands-on activities. Hosted by gallery educator Siobhan Wiggans, these free events are fun and informative for the whole family.

Curated by Mary Jo Hughes, Take Comfort: The Career of Charles Comfort is circulated by the Winnipeg Art Gallery and on view until September 2.

The celebration of the Year of the Craft continues with a free Knit’n’Knatter on August 20 at 7 p.m. in the Common Threads exhibition. Curated by Lee Plested, Common Threads looks at knitting and embroidery in contemporary art, drawing inspiration from social groups forged by a common love of craft, in turn inspiring the gallery staff to create their own group of knitting-lovers! Everyone who loves knitting is invited to pack up their yarn and needles and come on out!

For more information on any of these events, please contact gallery educator Siobhan Wiggans at 902.628.6112 or confederationcentre.com.
