dance umbrella, the Confederation Centre of the Arts’ dance education program, welcomes Amy Mullen, MFA, to its teaching staff this fall.
Mullen has extensive experience as a teacher, performer and choreographer, most recently in Boulder, Colorado where she was production manager and performer with Evolving Doors Dance Company, and dance instructor at September High School.
dance umbrella director Peggy Reddin chose Mullen because her teaching philosophy – emphasizing community building, cultivating artistry and developing a sense of creative growth through self-expression and risk taking – mirrors that of the dance umbrella team.
That philosophy has brought dance umbrella to the opening of its 20th season of classes and performance this fall. Over the past two decades, dance umbrella has grown from 50 students to more than 350 in a schedule encompassing 48 classes and three studios.
In addition to the foundation program of classes in creative movement, ballet, jazz and modern dance, dance umbrella is offering three supplementary programs for the 2007-08 season. These include an extended tap program introducing students ages ten years and up to classical tap technique; “Dance For the Health of It”, a fun fusion of various dance styles, warm-up rhythms and stretch exercises to get the adult body moving; and musical theatre for youth ages 11 to 14. Voice and drama instructor Sandy Zinck, in her first venture with dance umbrella, and dance instructor Wanda Naylor will lead students in an exploration of the technical and expressive elements of drama, voice and dance used in musical theatre.
Open registration will take place on September 4 and 5 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Confederation Centre’s boardroom.
