The Confederation Centre Youth Arts Council (YAC) is a group focused on giving youth across PEI an opportunity to get involved in the arts at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. On February 1, at 7 p.m. they are hosting their first event called the YAC Café in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. This event will feature local musical talent as well as youth photography.
Youth from across the Island, aged 13-18, are encouraged to send their favourite photographs taken by themselves to YAC. During the YAC Café there will be a photography contest just for teens and these photographs will be judged by three local experts. This contest is a fantastic opportunity for teens to show their talents. The theme for the pictures is “Mingle.” This is up for any interpretation, the more abstract the better. The theme was chosen to encourage teens to go against the stereotype of teenagers communicating solely through computers and cell phones.
The winning photographer will have his or her photograph published in The Buzz, the opportunity to work with a professional photographer, and receive free tickets to a show at the Confederation Centre All submissions are due January 27 at midnight. You can either drop off your submission to the Centre or e-mail it to gmail.com.
The group will be hosting many more events in the future and new members are always welcome. Events that the group might be hosting in the future are cartoon workshops, button events, and the Un-Prom, an event featuring local designers’ interpretations of your non traditional prom dress. The Un-Prom would be showcased as a fashion show and the dresses will be on sale after the show.
Because this is the first year for the arts council there is plenty of room for creativity and teens are encouraged to send their ideas for events as well. The purpose of YAC is to make the Confederation Centre more accessible to teens.
