Extraordinary Symons Lecture set for Toronto

The Symons Lecture Series, the Confederation Centre of the Arts’ annual discourse on the state of confederation, will present a special lecture at the University of Toronto on February 28. Dr. Ian E. Wilson, the Librarian and Archivist of Canada, will present the Extraordinary Symons Lecture at the Innis Town Hall, Innis College.

“We have arranged this lecture to recognize two accomplishments for the Confederation Centre of the Arts,” says H. Wayne Hambly, chairman of the board of directors for the Fathers of Confederation Building Trust. “We are acknowledging the renewed support of the Province of Ontario for the Confederation Centre announced by Premier McGuinty last November.”

“The Centre commissioned Canada’s foremost medallion artist, Dora de Pédery-Hunt, to create a medal specifically for the Symons Lecture. She has completed this one of a kind medal that we will present to past Lecture Series speakers as well as to Dr. Wilson.”

Dr. Wilson’s presentation is entitled To Know Ourselves.

The Symons Lecture on the State of Confederation, a national event that provides Canadians an opportunity to reflect upon their country and its future, is traditionally held each fall in Charlottetown to mark the anniversary of the meetings of the Fathers of Confederation in 1864.

The lecture honours Professor Thomas H.B. Symons, a supporter and board member of the Confederation Centre for many years. Professor Symons, the founding President of Trent University in Ontario, is widely recognized for his work in the field of Canadian Studies, in particular in the areas of public policy, heritage and education.
