Get set for some big trading with small art at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery’s first ever button event February 29. Enjoy music, refreshments, playful art and the chance to pick your favourites out of fifty button designs.
‘Cute as a…’ announced an open competition earlier this year for artists to submit designs for 1 ¼ inch buttons. Fifty designs have been selected and reproduced and are ready for trading.
“I got the idea from some galleries in Toronto and Vancouver,” says Siobhan Wiggans, Education and Outreach Officer at the Centre. “I initiated this program because I thought it would be a great fit between the Centre and the community.”
All ages are invited to the evening event at the Art Gallery. At ‘cute as a…’ ticket holders will each draw five buttons from a bowl for trading.
Wiggans received 62 design submissions. Local community members Kim Devine, Karen Mair and Greg Doran judged them based on design and content. All designs were anonymous when the judges examined them. The youngest artist was two and half years old.
All of the selected designs will be on display in a mini exhibition at the event. There will be a preview of the selected designs from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 29 in the Upper East Gallery.
“During the winter months the Island can be quiet, but hopefully this will get people out to join in on the fun,” Wiggans says. “‘Cute as a…’ will be a great way to meet new people because the trading will be sure to spark conversation.”
Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the door or the Box Office. Each ticket holder will receive five buttons the night of the event for trading. There will be refreshments provided and music playing throughout the evening. Start time is 7:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery.
