Charlottetown – Young artists take note: the Honourable Barbara A. Hagerman, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, is holding a juried art contest with the winning entries to be exhibited at Government House. One of Her Honour’s initiatives during her term is to make connections between young people and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and Government House.
As part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the deportation of the Island’s Acadians in 1758, the Lieutenant Governor is inviting school aged children from Grades 1 to 12 to submit artwork on one of two themes: either a representation of the deportation or a representation of the contemporary success of Acadians on Prince Edward Island. The jury will award winning entries in different categories based on the age of the artist.
All submissions must be 11x17 inches and be two dimensional (ie, no sculptures or carvings). Acceptable formats include drawing, watercolour, oil or acrylic paints, prints or photographs. Artists must include their name, address, phone number, age and, if they have one, their email address.
Artists may also include a written text, in French or English, to accompany their entries, though it is not required.
The Confederation Centre Art Gallery will frame the winning entries to be displayed at Government House throughout the summer. The winning entries will also be reproduced in La Voix Acadienne this summer.
The deadline for submissions is May 2, 2008. Winners will be announced in mid-May. Entries should be dropped off at the Gallery or mailed to: Confederation Centre Art Gallery, ATTN Monique Lafontaine, 145 Richmond Street, Charlottetown, PE, C1A 1J1.
