Charlottetown – Celebrate Good Friday with Choral Music at Trinity United Church. The Confederation Singers and guest soloists, accompanied by Symphony Nova Scotia’s Strings, present an afternoon of sacred music featuring the famous Requiem by Wolfgang Amadaeus Mozart.
“The intrigue surrounding the Mozart Requiem is the most interesting aspect of this work. It's a very famous master work,” says Donald Fraser, Director of Music at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. “Mozart died in 1791, leaving his Requiem unfinished. We know that the Requiem was commissioned by an anonymous patron whose identity remained unknown to Mozart and, in fact, came to light only in 1800. The rest of the story is a tangle of contradictory assertions, gossip and romantic myth-making.”
The first public performance of the Requiem was in 1792 in Vienna. By the turn of the 19th Century, the Requiem was well known throughout Germany and beyond, remaining for some time the only Requiem Mass for solemn occasions. In 1840 it was used at Napoleon's burial in Paris.
The March 21 performance at Trinity United Church will also feature a Mozart String Quartet and choral music for a Holy Day. Soloists for the performance are Sung Ha Shin-Bouey, Soprano; Suzanne Campbell, Alto; Michael Vandergaag, Tenor; Jacques Arsenault, Bass-Baritone.
