Charlottetown – The auction of original works by established Island artists will benefit the next generation of creative minds and hands on PEI. Youth programming at the Confederation Centre of the Arts is the beneficiary of Behind the Red Velvet, the annual fund-raising event held on the Mainstage recently.
The sixth annual fund-raising dinner and auction raised nearly $50,000. The money supports youth programming at the Centre, including dance umbrella and other Young@Arts programs.

Through school collaborations, summer camps and year-round classes and activities, Young@Arts introduces children to the arts in a fun and professional setting. More than 1,200 children benefit each year from programs including theatre camps, art classes, choral music, Arts Discovery Days and the Family Sunday program.
Dance umbrella, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, offers dance classes for children three years old to adult in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and musical theatre. The program has almost 400 participants this year.
Local artists and businesses donated many items for the auction including original works of art by Karen Gallant, Erica Rutherford, Susana Rutherford, Don Andrus, Stephen MacInnis, Henry Purdy and Kier Kenny among many others.
