Charlottetown – You will know the names and you will know the words. Songs from The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Four Seasons, Aretha Franklin, Ike and Tina Turner will all be performed on the Mainstage at the Confederation Centre of the Arts this summer in The British Invasion II America Strikes Back!
The sequel to last summer’s hit musical revue The British Invasion, the new show features songs from both sides of the Atlantic battling it out for musical supremacy in our hearts and memories. The Charlottetown Festival cast arrived in mid-May and are actively rehearsing the show and finalizing the song list.
“With the canon of music and a stellar cast, we can feel the electricity in the rehearsal hall,” says Anne Allan, artistic director at the Charlottetown Festival and one of the show’s creators. Allan also directs and choreographs America Strikes Back! “It is difficult to choose only 90 songs, to choose songs that we can theatricalize, and that show a sense of the era.”
“Hearing the music live, with the 19 piece orchestra, it heightens the experience. We are telling a story of these renowned artists through their music from the 60s to the 80s. There is disco, Motown, Celtic, and of course rock and roll,” she adds. “The bottom line is it is hugely entertaining.”
Half price previews for British Invasion II America Strikes Back! are on June 18 and 19. The gala opening is June 20. Tickets are available at the Confederation Centre’s Box Office at 1-800-565-0278 or online at www.charlottetownfestival.com.
