Charlottetown – Printmaking in all its complexities is the subject of a new exhibit at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery opening June 2. Printed in PEI reveals a selection of nearly 40 prints created between 1991 and 2006 by members of the Printmakers Council of Prince Edward Island and highlights the varied approaches to printmaking as a form of artistic practice. The pieces range from traditional mezzotints, to woodcuts, to book work, to mixed techniques.
“The exhibition Printed in PEI contains a selection of prints by Island artists and visiting printmakers to give visitors an overview of the breadth of artistic production undertaken at the Printmakers Council studio,” says Kevin Rice, Registrar and Associate Curator at the gallery.
Comparing proofs of various stages or states in the printmaking process can demonstrate how the maker’s subject is impacted by the printed reversal of the composition, the choice of ink colour, the plate tone, or even type of paper used. Included are a variety of proofs and editioned prints by Anne Meredith Barry, Eveline Boulva, Lesley Dubey, Libby Hague, Elaine Harrison, Debra James Percival, Harold Klunder, Manuel Lau, Ann D. Lee, Karl MacKeeman, Patti Nicholson & Matt Pollard, Cecilia Oberholzer, Libby Oughton, Nigel G. Roe, Ambika Gail Rutherford, Erica Rutherford, Madeleine Samson, Terry Dunton Stevenson, Otis Tamasauskas, Christine Trainor, Richard Vickerson, and Hilda Woolnough.
Incorporated in 1991, The Printmakers Council of PEI Inc. closed their studio after fifteen productive years and generously donated their archive of nearly 300 prints to the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in 2007.
Printed in PEI opens June 2 and runs to August 31 in the Entrance Gallery of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. The show is curated by Kevin Rice and organized by Confederation Centre Art Gallery.
