Charlottetown – Discover works on the edge at The Fringe, August 27 to 31 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. The Charlottetown Festival presents the second annual fringe festival showcasing emerging works in theatre, film, spoken word and movement.
“We are thrilled about our amazing second season. The Fringe has been such a great opportunity for Island audiences to see top notch local dance, theatre and film productions,” says Alix MacLean, coordinator of the Fringe. “This year, audiences can expect to see it all: drama, comedy, dance, even an excerpt from a new musical.”
“The unique part of the Fringe is that audiences can participate in the theatre-going experience – they can ask questions and hear from the performers directly after each performance. Last year both performers and audience members found this to be really rewarding.”

Marlene Handrahan comes home from Toronto (with a storage unit) and together with Catherine O’Brien explores a woman’s search for understanding, order, the meaning of life, and a set of dishes. A one-act, multi-boxed musing on why people end up where they are, where to go next, and how to find what you need to take you there. Martha’s Box is a comic monologue, dialogue, diatribe, RANT.
Sketch 22, playing Wednesday.
Sketch 22 features Rob MacDonald, Graham Putnam, Andrew Sprague, Dennis Trainor and Lennie MacPherson. They will be performing an excerpt from their wildly successful fifth season show.
Never Has Been, by Corey Poirier. Playing Wednesday.
Seasoned, Island-born performer Corey Poirier has traveled and performed music, comedy, and spoken word throughout the country. Never Has Been is his story shared through humorous, thought-provoking spoken word, storytelling, and music. Poirier is a Fringe veteran, having performed in numerous films and plays at the Atlantic Fringe in Halifax.
The Scavenger’s Daughter, a new performance piece by Colm Magner. Playing Saturday.
Witness the dissolution of a regular Irish guy as he travels to the funeral of his brother. The Scavenger’s Daughter is a new dark and delicious comedy from Colm Magner. Colm has been acting, directing and writing across Canada for 25 years. Described by Peter Marks in the New York Times as an ‘active creative force’ for his work at the Shaw Festival, Magner has written three previous monologues.
…And in Local News, written and performed by Patrick Ledwell. Playing Thursday.
Patrick Ledwell says about his twenty minute comedy piece: “There are huge issues facing Islanders today – the economy, health care, and the environment. However, by focusing on major issues, we may miss small, interesting stories in local headlines: the missing pets, the unconventional community events, and the creative real estate offers. These smaller print stories speak volumes about the state of our society, and why we’re holding fast together on this little chunk of sand.”
The Unauthorized Love Story of James T. Kirk, written and performed by Sean Wiebe. Playing Thursday.
Like reading a warp-powered romance with marginal notes written by the author, audiences will swoon at the intimate poetry of Captain Kirk, and the mysterious blonde lab tech, Celeste. Overhearing their private words of wit, charm and humor, everything you thought you knew about love will be questioned.
