Charlottetown – Melanie Doane returns to the Canadian music scene after a five year hiatus with a new album, A Thousand Nights, and a concert tour that brings her to PEI this Sunday. The Confederation Bridge Concert Series presents Melanie Doane at the Mack Theatre at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Sunday, August 31.
A Thousand Nights, released July 1, features talented Canadian peers Jim Cuddy, Ron Sexsmith, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Kathryn Rose, Kevin Breit, Andrew Burashko and her husband Ted Dykstra.
“When we were kids we didn't listen to children's music. We just listened to great stuff that our parents had in their record collection,” she said in a press release at the launch of her new album. “In that spirit I wanted to make a record that's simple and real and reflects my love for playing acoustic instruments and singing great harmony with my friends: music that works on many levels; music you can listen to, with or without your kids. . . for a thousand nights.”
An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and singer, Doane recorded three original tunes and seven covers for this album from a list of singer-songwriters such as Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty, Christine McVie, Bruce Cockburn and Tom Waits.
Halifax-born Doane has four top 40 singles, a Juno Award for Best New Artist, a Canadian Radio Award for Most Charted Rock Artist, and has performed in more than 200 shows with the likes of Jann Arden, Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair and Great Big Sea. A Thousand Nights is her sixth album.
