Charlottetown – Canada’s tourism industry has named the Confederation Centre of the Arts the best business in the country. The Centre has won the prestigious Business of the Year Award from the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC).
The TIAC 2008 National Awards for Tourism Excellence were announced last night during Canada's Tourism Leadership Summit in Gatineau, Québec.
“It is very meaningful to us that an arts organization has been deemed to be the business of the year by the tourism industry of Canada,” said David MacKenzie, CEO of the Confederation Centre of the Arts, who accepted the award. “Recognition by our peers of the work we do in the arts while at the same time growing the Confederation Centre with sustainable business practices is an important endorsement for the role of the arts.”
“On behalf of the board and all staff, we are honoured to be this year’s recipient,” he said. MacKenzie also congratulated Michel LeChasseur, of Strait Crossing Bridge Ltd. on the Confederation Bridge’s award as Corporate Partner of the Year noting that the Bridge has long been a strong advocate and partner of the Centre and its programming.
TIAC hands out the National Awards for Tourism Excellence each year to businesses, events, and individuals “to recognize and foster Canadian tourism excellence.” This was the Centre’s first nomination in this category. The Charlottetown Festival is a previous National Award winner as Event of the Year in 2003.
