Charlottetown – PEI Presents an afternoon of one of the most recognizable and popular pieces of music for the holiday season. Handel’s Messiah returns under the direction of Donald Fraser with a performance that has become a tradition in Charlottetown.
On Sunday, December 7, the Confederation Singers and guest soloists perform this inspirational celebration of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, written by German composer George Frederic Handel in 1741. Messiah is Handel's most famous creation and is among the most popular works in the Western choral tradition. This performance takes place on the Mainstage at the Confederation Centre of the Arts at 2:30 p.m.
The guest soloists include soprano Sung Ha Shin-Bouey, mezzo-soprano Paula Rockwell, tenor Graham Thomson and bass-baritone Douglas Millar. Shin-Bouey, Rockwell and Millar are veterans of this annual performance. Thomson is the son of choir member Rob Thomson and a former choir member himself. He started with the Confederation Centre Boys Choir at age seven and sang with them until he joined the American Boychoir at age 11.
Thomson then completed a bachelor’s degree and an artist’s diploma in vocal performance at the University of Western Ontario and a master’s degree at McGill University. Currently living in Toronto, he has performed across Canada and the US and around the world in France, Latvia, Japan and Andorra. Most recently he performed with the Calgary Opera and back home on the Island at the Indian River Festival in 2008.
