Eun-Mee Yang presents latest work

Charlottetown – Twelve paintings in the signature styles of twelve internationally renowned artists are the basis of a new exhibit at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Eun-Mee Yang’s Korean Girlfriend Goes Shopping opens January 31 and runs through March 29.

Korean Girlfriend Goes Shopping is a series of works where Yang does not copy but creates works “in the style of” several prominent artists.

“The operative word in this series of paintings is ‘re-creation,’ since it is not my intention to produce a precise copy of any particular piece by any one of the dozen artists chosen,” the artist says. “Nevertheless, it is important to me that the viewer recognize an artist’s signature style, which I then go on to subvert by means of my own text insertion.”

Born in South Korea, Yang became a Canadian citizen in 1990. She earned a BFA degree at Concordia University. Her major was in sculpture but included work in drawing and painting. In 1999 her work was chosen for the EMERGING SCULPTORS exhibition of the Sculptor’s Society of Canada held in Toronto. In 2001 Yang created YEO HANG: JOURNEY an installation piece and exhibition of sculptures at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery.

Yang has exhibited her work extensively in both solo and group exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal and Charlottetown. The exhibit is part of the RBC Emerging Artists series at the Gallery supported by the RBC Foundation.

The Gallery is hosting an opening reception for the exhibit John Cox, Apples and Bowls: Welcome to Paradise and the Eun-Mee Yang exhibit, Korean Girlfriend Goes Shopping, on Saturday, January 31 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
