Charlottetown – One artist paying tribute to another is the topic of this month’s ArtTalk at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Remembering Miller - a talk by Donald Andrus on the Saint John artist Miller Gore Brittain takes place Tuesday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m.
“One of the last times I saw Miller Brittain, I was leaving his home on Sandy Point Road in Saint John. He shouted after me from his front door: "Don't forget me!" I haven't,” says Andrus.
Brittain (1912-1968) is one of New Brunswick’s most celebrated artists. The exhibition Miller Brittain: When the Stars Threw Down Their Spears opened January 25 at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and runs until May 10.
Donald Andrus studied at the University of Toronto and taught at Concordia University before pursuing his studio work full-time. He has exhibited steadily in museums and galleries since 1988 and recently was given a 15 year survey exhibition by the Centre gallery. He is represented in such collections as the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the PEI Art Bank.
“I would like this talk to be something more like a chat and reminiscence of the man in his familiar setting of the mansion on Sandy Point Road in Saint John where he lived. If I can create a picture of this setting and how Miller spoke and acted there, I think it should be possible to give a better idea of why he created the work that he did in those last 10 years of his life,” Andrus says.
The Remembering Miller ArtTalk is free to attend and takes place in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery Tuesday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m.
