Charlottetown – On Friday, March 20th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., artist Eun-Mee Yang will destroy all 12 artworks in her exhibition Korean Girlfriend Goes Shopping at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Yang sees this action as the logical conclusion to a project which was about her desire to deny the art market power over her work and power over herself.
Entitled Full Circle, this activity does not mark the end of the exhibit. The pile of rubble that remains of the 12 pieces will be the focus of the exhibition until March 29.
Yang created 12 paintings in the signature styles of 12 internationally renowned artists for Korean Girlfriend Goes Shopping which have been on display in the Entrance Gallery since January 31. Yang did not copy but created works “in the style of” the other artists. She also created a limited run of 50 copies of each of her pieces on postcards that will be the only remaining versions of her artwork. They are available as complete sets of postcards, along with a poster of the exhibition, sold in a shopping bag marked with KGGS at the Gallery for $20.
Yang has exhibited her work extensively in both solo and group exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal and Charlottetown. The exhibit is part of the RBC Emerging Artists series at the Gallery supported by the RBC Foundation.
