Charlottetown – The Confederation Centre Youth Chorus will hold its 32nd annual fundraising dinner and awards presentation on Thursday, April 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a reception at Mavor’s Bistro & Bar.
Jeanette MacAulay, Director of Life-Long Learning at UPEI, will emcee the event. Following dinner in Memorial Hall, the Youth Chorus will perform selections by Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, Palestrina and Eleanor Daley.
The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of 17 awards to Chorus members for qualities of loyalty, enthusiasm, singing ability, self-discipline, progress, musical potential and leadership. Numerous well-known local citizens who support the work of the Confederation Centre’s adult and youth choirs provide the awards, some of which have been given out since the days of the Boys’ Choir in the 1970s.
The Confederation Centre Youth Chorus provides Island youth, aged 8-20, with a unique opportunity to develop their musical skills at home and abroad. Throughout its history, the chorus has performed in many concerts at the Confederation Centre and at community events. The Chorus recorded a CD entitled On Tour (2003) and have toured extensively, travelling to France, Belgium, Great Britain, Washington D.C., New York City, British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
The 44-member touring choir performed at the dedication ceremony for the newly-restored Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France on April 9, 2007, the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. This year the Chorus will tour to Orlando, Florida where they will sing on the Future World West Stage at Epcot Centre, Disney World.
Tickets for the dinner are $50 per person, $35 of which is tax deductible, and may be obtained from members of the Chorus or by calling the Confederation Centre Box Office at (902) 566-1267. Proceeds from this event are used to assist the Centre’s choral music program, which is sponsored by Maritime Electric.
