Plenty of arts activities for children at the Confederation Centre Gallery

Charlottetown – The Confederation Centre Art Gallery is bustling with a full slate of arts activities for children this spring.

This past March, participants in the children’s mARTch Break Camp had the opportunity to explore children’s toys from the provincial artifactory dating back to the first half of the 20th century. The pieces include toy rifles, a doctor’s kit, a sewing machine, irons, telephones, and a magic lantern. Although these toys seem modest when compared to the computers, MP3 players, and personal gaming devices children play with today, they still sparked the wonder and imagination of the newest generation.

The exhibit Childhood Then and Now in the Young People’s Gallery presents some of the observations from the mARTch Break Camp children about these objects, reminding people of what life was like for an earlier generation of children. Childhood Then and Now is on display until May 17.

In other programming for young people, this month’s Family Sunday will explore sculpture and the exhibition This, That and the Other Thing. Family Sunday is April 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. for children ages 4 to 10 and their caregivers and is free to attend.

The final Art PD Day of the school year is May 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children ages 6 to11. Children will get an in-depth look at an exhibition with a gallery guide. Afterwards, they will work with a professional artist and create a masterpiece that can find a place in your home. The registration fee is $25 and a family rate is available for two or more students.
