Other Worlds exhibit shows a side of earth few have seen

Charlottetown – “There may in fact be a sense of awe, people tend to get jaded,” curator Ihor Holubizky said about the Confederation Centre’s new exhibit, Other Worlds. The show, a part of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery’s 2009 Summer Exhibitions, will be running until August 23.

Other Worlds is a concept show that came to fruition while Jon Tupper, the gallery’s previous director, was putting together ideas for the coming summer’s programming. While in Europe he watched the video Vexation Island, which he felt would be a great part of a show, if only he could get the other pieces to come together. The result, with the help of Holubizky, is Other Worlds.

Holubizky also saw the video, a perpetually running movie depicting a paradise/nightmare, depending on your point of view and combined the work with several other artists’ pieces he felt could show people a world they may never see.

“There are always other worlds, historically artists have gone to record it,” he said.

Among the 12 artists featured, seven are Canadian, with PEI’s Brian Burke’s work being displayed throughout.

The show consists of paintings, mostly of the surreal and remote parts of earth, with some digitally enhanced images that could be mistaken for either luxury car advertising or some hallucinogenic dreamscape.

Two continually running projections, Vexation Island and Canadian Kelly Richardson’s, Exiles from a Shattered Planet, a grim look at the moment before the world ends, are also on display.

While the exhibit is open to the public for viewing now, the official opening of the summer gallery will be Friday, June 12. Gallery hours are 9-5 everyday.
