Charlottetown – Renowned Maritime artist Tom Forrestall’s work is the subject of a new exhibition at the Confederation Centre’s Art Gallery as part of the Summer Exhibitions. Tom Forrestall: Paintings, Drawings, Writings is now on display. Along with the work, which will show until August 23, the artist will be giving an Art Talk in the Gallery July 21.
His art has been described as Magic Realism – a term coined for post-World War II east coast painters such as Alex Colville and Mary Pratt – which focuses on a world we all know to be familiar, but is usually unobserved or dismissed.
“When Forrestall goes for a walk, one can be certain that he looks carefully at the world around him. This show celebrates the artist and the development of his remarkable creative practice, but it also speaks to everyday existence and the beauty of fleeting moments,” said Mireille Eagan, Interim Curator of the Gallery.
Forrestall grew up in Middleton and Dartmouth and attended art classes at the Nova Scotia College in Halifax before he was awarded a scholarship to the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison University, where he studied with Colville. Upon graduation he received one of the first Canada Council grants for independent study which enabled him to travel and paint throughout Europe.
Known mostly for his egg-tempera paintings, Forrestall is unusually adept in other methods including watercolours and a vast array of sketchbooks documenting his more spontaneous creations.
Guest curated by Tom Smart, Forrestall’s work will display until August 23. His talk will take place July 21 in the Art Gallery at 7 pm.
The exhibit is circulated by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and sponsored by Office X-Perts.
