10 & 60 quietly looks at Canada’s youngest province and territory

Charlottetown – 10 & 60, a group effort by Canadian photographer Anna Karpinski and multimedia artist Peter Wilkins, is a new show at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery looking at the people of Canada’s most recent entries into Confederation, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nunavut.

Pieced together from a series of black and white photographs from Karpinski’s journey to Nunavut for their inauguration day, April 1, 1999, and a series of “in-between” interviews with some prominent Newfoundlanders by Wilkins, the show eliminates the myths and stereotypes of a people to examine a particular knowledge of a place.

“They don’t live on reserves, but they weren’t self-governed and this was a step in the right direction,” Karpinski said of why she chose to visit Nunavut for these pictures. “I hope it stirs something up in people and they think about what goes on over there (in Nunavut).”

Karpinski’s images of life in the north coupled with Wilkins’ kinetic videos provide a glimpse of people caught in between moments. Well known Newfoundlanders including artist Mary Pratt and Lieutenant-Governor John Crosby are shown on Wilkins’ videos during a moment that would normally be considered an out-take during an interview, long pauses, much adjusting of seats, but it’s exactly how it’s meant to be seen. Newfoundland and Labrador was the last province to enter Confederation, on March 31, 1949.

“My work is always with people and I’m honoured to be linked with that (of Wilkins). It works with my work,” said Karpinski.

Anna Karpinski and Peter Wilkins: 10 & 60 is on display at the Confederation Centre’s Entrance Gallery. The show is part of the Art Gallery’s Summer Exhibitions and will run until August 23. The exhibit is sponsored by the Best Western Charlottetown and the Citadel Halifax Hotel.
