mARTch Break Camp An arts camp for children ages six to eleven will be offered during March break week at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Between March 15-19, children will have the opportunity to explore different aspects of making and appreciating art, said Becka Viau, visual arts educator at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. “It’s a chance for you to experience the art gallery and express yourself through visual art in the studio,” Viau explained. “The kids spend time in the gallery learning about critical thinking and visual literacy – how to read images.” Along with learning self-expression and team-building, children will gain confidence in themselves and their creations. “It’s also teaching them that a gallery is a place for all ages. It’s a public space and it can be fun,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be boring. Art is not boring. It’s interesting and it’s challenging.” Art forms visited during the day camp will likely include paper mache, sculpting, drawing and painting, Viau added. “Really kind of exploring a whole world of visual arts.” The camp costs $125 for the week. Children should be dropped off at the Centre at 8:30 a.m. and picked up at 4 p.m. Children are asked to bring indoor shoes, two snacks and a lunch. Viau recommends kids come prepared to get messy. “Art is messy. Sometimes the messier it is, the more fun it is.” There are 20 spots available for the day camp.
